Fins for the Superbowl

A page devoted to unrestrained adoration of the NFL's finest. Jimmy J's Aqua army the Miami Dolphins

Jimmy aint D(r)aft

So he hasn't even been our head-coach for a year yet. Already we're 5-5. Not bad. Don used to get that one regularly. The difference? the Shulesta used to bring in shitloads of Free Agent (well in the last few years). He was fairly sure that Miami had a good team and where just a few multi-million pound building blocks away from being a superbowl team (why did he never think one of these blocks might be a good running back). It seems he was wrong. He tried it year after year in the end, and the whole never seemed to quite be the some of the parts. Now Jimmy is here. Jimmy doesn't build on reasonable foundations. Jimmy demolishes and starts again doing it his way. He let the good players who wanted expensive contracts go. Now I would have to say these guys are amongst the best in the league. I firmly believe that. However I would also have to say that in recent years they have under-achieved at key moments and are probably as much to blame as anyone else for us not getting to the big one.

Jimmy tore down the framework of the old Miami Dolphins. Those players who did stay have, in many cases, been reduced to depth roles (eg. Bernie Parmalee - last years leading rusher, this years no. 3 at best; or J.B. Brown - a starter opposite Troy Vincent last year, this year a 2ndstringer who looks poor when he plays), even those who are still prominent may be living on limited time (You have to wonder how long it will actually be before Dan's multi-million dollar salary is heading for the QB graveyard (aka Kansas City) to leave Craig Ericson as the starter). He replaced the allegedly overpaid, lazy old lineup with one of his type of players.

We have the old Jimmy players people like Stubbs (currently our leading sacker) who sign just to play for their old college boss, actually taking a pay cut while free agents. There are the other teams rejects who Jimmy thinks can still do the job like Ericson (who has posted better numbers than Dan a lot of the time). Then there is Jimmy's strength. The draft. Jimmy went to the draft and came back with half a team. Jimmy we need some help in the backfield. Hmm running backs, lets take: Karim Abdul Jabbar in the third (a classic Jimmy back, explosive but direct, currently our top rusher and potentially on for a 1,000 yard season), Stanley Pritchett in the fourth (?) (One of the top passing targets this year and a useful blocker / occasional rusher, Daryl Johnson anyone), we'll take this Jerris McPhail kid in the later rounds (a useful third down back and very good receiver, apparently the fastest guy on the team). Well that's the starting backfield taken care of. Some defense? How about Daryl Gardner of Baylor (if he becomes anywhere near as good as he could be we'll actually have a decent start to a defensive line), then for the piece de la resistance, Zack Thomas (this guy makes Brian Cox look like a complete Donkey, you just set Zack loose and he destroys their gameplan) with hindsight everyone is now thinking he should have gone in the first round, along with Jabbar and probably Pritchett.

Ok so there are some areas that could still use some work (like the defensive backfield, though Terrell Buckley seems to be having a bit of a blinder). But I am sure in next year's draft Jimmy will sort these out. This is the rebuilding year, and we are 5-5 and not an unrealistic shot for the playoffs. Miami are hosting the Superbowl in '99 look for us to be at home going for our second strait championship!

Dan is definatly the man

Miami 37 Indy shouldn't have bothered turning up. The big story, Dan Marina becomes the first man to break 4,000 completions and 50,000 yards in the same game. This man is god. All he need do now is lead the fins to the bowl game and finally people will have to admit he is the best there has been.
