CM2 Tips
CM2 is very much a game where everyone has their own style. Due to the random nature every
game is different. These tips often represent merely regular trends. Unless stated these tips are
geared to the latest (96/97) version.
Who to Buy?
Good question. Sometimes big names are very good (Sammer, Batistuta, Ferdinand) other times they are not (Sinclair in particular). Buying from abroad is almost always good. You tend to get a lot more for your money. In particular try to buy from the developing football markets. The impovrished Eastern European nations don't expect much for their stars, talent is available from America, and Japan at diminished values. If you buy at home you often pay top dollar. In the 1996/7 version players are available for nothing once their contract expires, thus as their near the end of their contract (the last year) their value decreases to zero. This means that if you get in early you can often pinch players from clubs before their contract expires at a lesser fee, and before the big clubs come in to sign them on a free.
Look at a lot of things when buying players. Abilities are important. Their performance in games can be greatly influenced by these. Tackling, passing, heading, etc all have direct reference to stats which go to make up the rating out of ten. However these are not the full story. There are rating which you never get to see, the most important of these is ability. You can only try and guess this. Look at past average ratings (bearing in mind the standard of the league they play in) value also gives a clue. Also keep an eye on goal scoring and disciplinary records.
Here is a list of highly recomended 'bankers' (who are not ridiculously expensive)
Neil Lennon
Oleg Luzny
(I will add to this list as I play throught the latest version more. E-Mail me your suggestions)
Also bear in mind the game's system of generated players. When an old player retires a new player of the same nationality, in the same position, with roughly the same level of talent is generated. These players are easy to spot as they have no past. If they are English they will usually be free transfers or at clubs with small squads. Foreign chappies can pop up at any club. Just watch for the zeros in the appearances column. After a few seasons these players become very good. George Weah retired in one of my games. However he turned down 27.5k a week with premiership challengers to sign for 28k a week with division one Preston North End. Such is CM2 life. By the way this player went on to score a goal a game and get a 9.5 average rating. Bastards.
How to Play?
I still haven't got this perfected different formations seem to work with different teams, experiment. Boah's tips page has some good suggestions (see my links).
Anything else that helps?
The Flat F044 method of play greatly enhances the enjoyment of CM2, simply add the following accessories:
1) Large quantities of either coffee or beer
2) A good film running behind you (preferably something that's good to listen to, having another source of entertainment relieves the boredom caused by someone as meticulous as me searching for players or someone as desperate as Stuart changing his tactics 25 times in the second half)
3) Bags of crisps (hundreds)
4) Plenty of Playstation owners to walk in and say "oh, you're not playing that game again are you" or "I don't see the point, don't you see them play".
5) Someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of football (eg. me) and a good memory for which players people have just been looking at (ditto).
Good Luck
